Pets of All Sizes Can Brighten Up a Home
By Alice Lane
t's been said before that a dog is a man's best friend. While that may be true for many dogs, it can also be said for all kinds of pets. Whether it's a bird, fish, or iguana, having a pet in the home can liven up your days and give you a companion at all times. If you've been thinking about the perfect way to accent your southern living home plans, maybe getting a pet is the answer. Many people will tell you that having a pet will make you happier and help you live longer. There are also those that believe pets help reduce stress. Whatever the health benefits truly are, the smiles that pets bring to their owner's faces are usually the best reward.
Pet owners go to all sorts of lengths to ensure their pets are taken care of and treated like royalty. Some dog owners devote a whole room of their house to their four-legged friend. The room can be outfitted with a comfortable doggie bed, a wide assortment of chew toys, and extra-durable flooring for all those inevitable scratch marks. Cat owners have some interesting techniques at their disposal as well. In one configuration that works particularly well for a ranch home plan, a do-it-yourself type of homeowner can build cat "doors" throughout their house. These doors are simply holes small enough to let the cat through and keep kids out, and they allow the furry little friends to have free reign of the house even when their owners close a door on accident. This will also always give the cat an escape route, which is important to its feeling safe. And the home owner concerned about the look of their home can add trim around the door to match the rest of their house.
For those pets that love to roam free, perhaps the best part of living in a home is the yard that they can run around in. It doesn't even have to be a particularly large yard. House plans ranch, colonial, and bungalow are all popular configurations that sometimes find themselves on a smaller lot. While it certainly would be nice to have a couple acres to play fetch with your dog, you have to work with what you have. Dog parks are helpful for those with small yards as well. These designated areas allow you to give your dog the wide expanse they crave every now and again-without having the wide expanse in your back yard. Whether or not you have a big yard, getting a pet for your home is a great idea that you should consider.
